Change of lanes ends in collision with bus; mother and 5-year-old thrown off motorcycle

KUANTAN: A mother who abruptly changed lanes while riding with her five-year-old son on a motorcycle was met with an accident after being rear-ended by a tour bus along Jalan Kuantan-Pekan here today.

Both mother and son were thrown off their vehicle in the 36-second video which had gone viral on social media. The duo are now receiving treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) here.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said the crash involving the tour bus and motorcycle occurred at about 12.50pm.

"The tour bus with no passengers on board was travelling from Terengganu to Johor while the motorcycle was travelling in the same direction. The motorcyclist had exited a junction on the left side of the dual-carriageway and abruptly entered the speed lane.

"The bus driver had attempted to avoid them but failed due to the close distance of the vehicles and hit the motorcycle. The motorcyclist and pillion rider sustained injuries and were taken to HTAA," he said.

Wan Mohd Zahari said investigations revealed the crash occurred after the motorcyclist changed lanes from the left to right (fast) lane without ensuring traffic safety.

He said police will record the statement from the 41-year-old bus driver who escaped unhurt and the case is being investigated under section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The viral dashcam footage from the bus showed the pillion rider being flung into the air upon impact before landing on the road while his mother was thrown off the motorcycle.
