Melaka hopes filling of state civil servant permanent positions be given due consideration

MELAKA: The Melaka state government hopes that the federal government will consider approving permanent positions of civil servants in the state to be filled, to reach the set ceiling of 92 per cent.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said that it was due to the filling of permanent positions thus far only at 83.9 per cent, with the total number of civil servants in Melaka being 36,300, including permanent and contract appointments.

He said that the application for the approval was also based on Melaka being among the states which cannot establish its own state Public Service Commission (SPA), where the appointing authority of all civil servants, whether permanent or contract, in the state department is under the SPA.

"This total percentage has not yet reached the filling ceiling set by the Public Service Department, which is 92 per cent.

"I am concerned that the 83.9 per cent filling will continue to shrink, considering that the number of civil servants who will go on compulsory retirement by the end of this year is 74 people," he said.

He said this in his speech at the meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Melaka civil servants, at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), here today (Feb 9).

He added that the contraction was also feared to affect the smoothness of the service delivery system to the people, especially in Melaka.

"Therefore the state government would like to request that the approval be considered, so that all the policies formulated by the state government can be implemented more comprehensively," he said. — Bernama
