Many private housing contractors in Kelantan fail to provide proper infrastructure, leading to flood problems

KOTA BARU: Private contractors in the state have failed to provide proper infrastructure for housing projects, resulting in massive flooding problems in Kelantan.

Kelantan Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association (Rehda) deputy chairman Datuk Samsuri Awang Mat said these private contractors, which are not registered with the association, have also ignored regulations set by the government.

"These private contractors are not registered with us as the association's members and they move on their own.

"They build houses but they do not care about the impact of not following regulations and do not even care about basic infrastructure such as drainage systems.

"This is among the reasons for flooding in the housing areas," he said.

Samsuri, who is Kelantan Malaysia Property Exposition (Mapex) chairman said a total of 42 developers in the state have registered with the association.

"The 42 are active housing companies but some of them are now dying due to lack of projects.

"Apart from the presence of the private contractors, our members are also facing difficulties in getting projects due to the current economic situation," he added.

He said terrace houses, priced between RM220,000 to RM280,000 remained the top choice for locals.
