King's decree in Parliament highlights commitment to political stability, say analysts

KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's decree in Parliament today underscored his earnestness in putting a stop to repeated changes of government to ensure political stability.

Analysts believed that the royal address, delivered during the First Meeting of the Third Session of the 15th Parliament opening ceremony, cemented the unity government's legitimacy until the end of their term.

Political analyst Dr Ainul Adzellie Hasnul said the King's clear decree indicated that His Majesty wanted continuity for the development of the country and the economy.

"When the King said he will not entertain any attempt to topple the government, he does not want what happened before (the changing of four prime ministers) to reoccur.

"He wants a stable government that will administer for a full term.

The King also indicated that he does not want the opposition to interfere with the democratic process of this country and they should instead be a good opposition in Parliament.

"There must be a check and balance in Parliament," he told the NST.

Ainul said following the decree, the opposition should respect the unity government that was formed after the 15th General Election to stop any attempt to take over the government.

However, he added that the King's decree may not stop any attempt to overthrow the government.

"They will still try to prove that they have the numbers, but I do not see the opposition moving a vote of no confidence in Parliament.

"Even though they don't have the numbers, they will still continue to make noise."

Echoing Ainul, Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research senior fellow Dr Azmi Hassan said while the King's decree has indirectly endorsed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to continue his tenure until the term ends, the opposition could still explore other options to topple the current administration.

This, he said, included the submission of the no-confidence motion against Anwar in the Dewan Rakyat.

"The King had previously conveyed his views over the efforts to derail political stability in Malaysia. (And) the first thing that His Majesty touched on during his royal address today is that he will not tolerate any nonsense or attempts to topple the current government (by any quarters).

"Such address has (indirectly) given Anwar the confidence to fill the tenure (until the end of the term).

"However, the opposition has other options (to topple the government) by raising the motion of no-confidence against Anwar," he said.

Azmi added that should the opposition possess enough numbers, nothing could stop them from proposing the motion against Anwar.

"Hence, we are hoping that they will stop such nonsense as they do not have the numbers. (But,) if they do (have the numbers), they can start proposing the motion during the session tomorrow," he said.

Meanwhile, Azmi also touched on the King's decree for the government to be more conspicuous at the international level in its stance to support peace and combat terrorism.

This included taking a firm position on the Palestinian cause by calling for an immediate ceasefire and accelerating humanitarian aid access to the people of Gaza.

Following this, Azmi added that the King's decree should prompt the government to be more involved in the international process to prosecute Israel.

"With this, I am expecting the government to show more support for the Palestinian issue and they should be more involved in the international process to prosecute Israel.

"For example, the government should also ensure that the people of Gaza deserve the minimum basic of humanity in this particular case."
