Johor hosts landmark symposium to combat geo-hydrological disasters

JOHOR BARU: Johor has taken a step towards addressing its annual flood woes with the inauguration of the Geo-hydrological Disaster and Mitigation Symposium 2024, Media Digital Johor reported.

Aimed at crafting a robust strategy to achieve a flood-free Johor by the year 2030, the symposium is a collaborative effort between the Johor Department of Irrigation and Drainage and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's Tropical Geoengineering Centre (Geotropik), backed by the state government.

This key event marks a gathering of some of the brightest minds in the field, including international and local scholars, experts, researchers, and professionals, to delve into the pressing geohydrological challenges facing the state.

The symposium's agenda is centred around identifying and implementing effective mitigation measures against flooding, alongside addressing related issues such as landslides, sinkholes, and groundwater pollution exacerbated by climate change.

State Public Works, Transport and Infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh represented the Johor Chief Minister at the event's official opening at Holiday Villa, Johor Baru.
