17-year-old dies, friend seriously hurt in Penang bridge crash

SEBERANG PRAI: A motorcyclist died while his pillion rider sustained serious injuries after their machine skidded and rammed into a divider, causing them to be thrown into the opposite lane.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said a car, which failed to brake on time, knocked into the two teenagers.

He said police were alerted to the incident at Km 2.8 of the Penang Bridge, mainland bound, at about 4.38pm.

Initial investigation revealed the motorcycle the deceased, 17, and the female pillion rider, 15, were riding on skidded and rammed into the divider.

"The crash resulted in the duo being thrown off their motorcycle to the opposite lane before they were knocked by a car.

"As a result, the motorcyclist died at the scene while his pillion rider sustained severe injuries," he said today.

Helmi said the teen girl had been sent to Penang Hospital for treatment.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police urged those with information or those who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist in investigation.
