Malaysian student killed in NZ road crash sent mother surprise birthday gift

TELUK INTAN: Megat Ashman Aqif Megat Irman Jefni, the Malaysian student who perished in a road accident at Lake Tekapo, New Zealand yesterday, had surprised his mother with a cake and prayer robe as a birthday gift, recently.

Noor Aishah Abdul Latif, 49, said that Megat Ashman Aqif, affectionately called Qif, 21, presented this special gift on her birthday, which falls on March 12.

She said that her second child worked part-time during a semester break in New Zealand and sent the gift using a delivery service.

"My late child surprised me, he sent a cake and a telekung (prayer robe). I said, 'This must have cost you a lot, Qif, you've saved up a lot to spend on me.' He replied, 'It's nothing, mum, it's nothing.'

"Just recently, he informed me that he sent some money to me. I asked why he gave it to me, it should be the other way around. He said... I want blessings, mum, pray for me. He's truly a good son... whatever it is, he'll say 'yes, mum... yes mum...'

"He contacted me last Tuesday, via a video call on WhatsApp, he said he would be taking an exam on Thursday. He said he had an exam and asked me to pray for him," she told reporters when met at her residence in Kampung Melayu Langkap, here, today.

The housewife said the last time she met Qif was at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in July last year to send him off to continue his studies in commerce at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.

"My late child was talkative, throughout his studies there, he would contact me every week to talk about his activities, sometimes we'd talk for almost an hour. We didn't feel like he was far away.

"Sad... Allah lent him to us for 21 years and took him back during Ramadan," she said, unable to hold back her tears.

She added that her late son expressed his intention to return to Malaysia to celebrate Eid together, but she advised Qif not to do so as he had just arrived there.

Noor Aishah said she received the sad news from Qif's father, Megat Irman Jefni Megat Khas Hussaini, around 11am yesterday.

Yesterday, the Foreign Affairs Ministry through the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington confirmed a road accident incident involving five Malaysian students at Lake Tekapo at 1.45pm local time yesterday.

Two Malaysian students, Megat Ashman Aqif and Wan Nur Adlina Alisa died at the scene, while the other three Malaysian students who were injured, Nur Firas Wafiyyah, Lya Issable Walton and Muhamad Faris Mohd Fairusham, were flown to Christchurch Hospital in the South Island, New Zealand for immediate treatment.
