MACC confirms probe into FAM over National Training Centre project

GUA MUSANG: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that it is investigating the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) following allegations of corruption that surfaced from a poison-pen letter.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that their investigation is only focused on one issue, which is the construction of the National Training Centre (NTC) project in Putrajaya.

He emphasised that they will not interfere in matters concerning the administration of the national football governing body.

"We consider this case as one involving public interest. Based on the information provided, we are focusing only on one issue, which involves the construction of the National Training Centre project.

"For your information, the funding amounting to RM25 million came from FIFA (International Federation of Association Football), not from FAM.

"So, FAM only handled the procurement through tender processes and has submitted it back to FIFA for the final selection. FIFA has agreed with the related company. In two weeks (after the investigation), if there are no cases, we will say there are no cases.

"If there are cases indicating wrongdoing, we will propose charges accordingly," he said.

He said this after officiating the opening of the Gua Musang MACC Branch Office at the Kesedar (South Kelantan Development Authority) Headquarters here today.

FAM has been in the public eye following the circulation of a letter, with the construction of the NTC also becoming an issue after the project was mentioned in the letter.

Meanwhile, FAM Secretary-General Datuk Noor Azman Rahman explained that they cannot issue any statements until the MACC investigation is completed.
