Kongres: Autonomy in new school curriculum a chance for teachers' creativity to shine

SEREMBAN: The Congress of Unions of Teachers in the Malaysian Education Service (Kongres) has welcomed the government's announcement that teachers will have more autonomy when the new school curriculum is implemented in 2027.

Its secretary, Mohd Azizee Hasan, said the move would hopefully give teachers' creativity to shine when it comes to how they approach lessons.

"Different teachers face different circumstances, students, facilities, even different localities.

"As such, the teachers can evaluate things for themselves and find different methods, the best methods, to ensure the teaching process achieves the objectives that are set out.

"Kongres hopes that the ministry will provide training and the necessary skills to ensure the aspects of integrity and responsibility is strengthened so that this concept of autonomy is effective," he said.

On Thursday, Fadhlina had said teachers would be given greater autonomy when the new school curriculum was introduced in 2027.

She had said teachers had already been given autonomy with the introduction of the School-Based Assessments (PBS), but would have even more with the new curriculum.

However, she warned that this new greater autonomy must be embrace with integrity as it came with a huge responsibility.

Fadhlina had said the ministry was now prepping teachers with the framework under the new curriculum through a series of engagement sessions.

Azizee said the autonomy given to teachers must still be guided by the ministry to ensure the best results.

He said this was to ensure that teachers were capable of making the best possible decisions in lesson planning, the choice of teaching tools and the evaluation of students.

"This is crucial for quality education and to prevent dropouts. The ministry, through teacher training institutes, must prepare a model for teacher autonomy in terms of how to teach, integrity and responsibility," he added.
