#NSTviral: Outrage over RM50 squid dish: Customer warns others of 'ridiculous' charges"

KUALA LUMPUR: A RM50 sotong (squid) dish has caused netizens to be infuriated by the exorbitant charges, describing it as "ridiculous".

A photo, uploaded by Hussin TJ Abdullah on Facebook, showed that his meal cost him a whopping RM75.

In his receipt, the restaurant in a mall in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, charged him RM50 for 'sotong manis' (sweet squid), along with two plates of white rice, some vegetables, one chicken dish, and two drinks.

Hussin warned netizens of this restaurant, claiming they charged people as they liked.

"Be careful when eating here. It's not just me who's been charged this way, others have, too.

"To those who haven't been here, if you can, don't come to this restaurant. Your pockets will be empty," he captioned.

Many netizens were furious over the excessive price, with some saying they could get a kilogramme of squid at that same price.

Hishamarlya Samad said: "RM50 for one squid, that's crazy… The owner of the shop is trying to get rich fast.

"If you have the receipt, just report (this restaurant). The price is unacceptable."

Another Facebook user, Nurhaniza Badie, also said the price of the squid was "illogical", especially in Sabah, where seafood should be cheaper.

"If this were in Peninsular Malaysia, I wouldn't be surprised because the prices there are expensive.

"RM75 can buy seafood for four people in Sabah."

Others have advised Hussin to lodge a report to the state Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.

"Don't wait too long to report to the ministry. Perhaps this restaurant owner wants to go on a holiday to Paris every month, that's why the prices are so high," said Nazimshah Rahman.

Later, in a statement, the ministry said the restaurant was being investigated for misleading and unclear pricing.

The restaurant operator has also been given two days to provide information justifying the price to the ministry.
