PAN Youth's aim to secure 30 pct quota for GE14 shot down

ALOR STAR: Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) Youth's wish to get a 30 per cent quota to represent the party in the 14th General Election (GE14) was voted down by its delegates today.

The motion, proposed by its Youth wing, was meant to project a young and vibrant image of the two-year-old party.

However, the motion was objected by some of the delegates, who said the candidates should be chosen based on merit, not age.

In debating the motion, some of the delegates said the youth should instead focus on serving the party first to build their reputation so that they would eventually be chosen on merit.

The motion was rejected after majority of the 898 delegates voted against the proposal.

In response, PAN youth chief Mohd Sany Hamzah said the wing movement accepted the delegates' decision with an open heart.

"In our view, the motion is good because the quota will be based on merit and the quality of winnable candidates to represent the party in GE14.

"The quota is not meant for male candidates only, but also covers young female candidates," he said when met at the end of the PAN national convention here today.
