SELAYANG: Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali today disagreed with the suggestion to hold an early state election to avoid Pakatan Harapan losing more seats due to the effects of the re-delineation exercise.
Describing it as "irrelevant", he said this was because the Parliament term would end in a few months time.
"I'm of the opinion that this is no longer relevant as the Parliament term will end in a few months.
"The proposal is illogical because it will create uncertainties among the 'rakyat' on the need to hold state election now," he said when met at Masjid Zakaria in Gombak today.
He said this following a report by a news portal, citing an opinion by political analyst Wong Chin Huat, that it will be a “smart move” by the Selangor government to dissolve the state assembly ahead of the 14th General Election to ward off the effects of the re-delineation of electoral boundaries.
Wong opined that such move can be an advantage to Pakatan Harapan in Selangor.
The PKR-held state government is currently in a legal battle with the Election Commission (EC) on the re-delineation of its electoral boundaries.
Azmin also pointed out that holding an early state election will cost more money and that the matter could have been discussed if the suggestion was made a year ago.
"It's the people's money we are taking about. In this situation, where the term is ending, I don't see the necessity to hold an early polls.
"Right now, we should focus on our services towards the people and help them with their problems." he added.
