SHAH ALAM: The candidate for the Selangor state legislative assembly speaker post is expected to be announced by next week.
Mentri Besar Amirudin Shari said the state administration had yet to arrive to a decision over the possible candidate for the post.
“Discussions and negotiations are ongoing. InsyaAllah, I believe (it) can be resolved in due time. I will make the announcement (of the candidate) after the state executive council (exco) meeting (on Wednesday),” he said.
Amirudin was speaking to reporters at his open house at Padang B, Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam here today.
On speculations that the speaker should be of someone with a background in law, Amirudin dismissed it as being mere rumours.
“Rumours are rumours. Rumours are just half truths,” said the Sungai Tua assemblyman.
Asked if he would elect a speaker with a legal background, he said: “We will consider everything, every consequence and factor (before coming to a conclusion).
“We will discuss this (with the state exco and Pakatan Harapan) and reach a consensus in one or two days. Only then will the candidate be announced. And I believe that all (state) Pakatan Harapan members will agree to it (if the candidate has been chosen based on a rational decision).
“We will make sure to appoint a good speaker or any appointment (to the state administration) to ensure we deliver to the rakyat. That is the main concern.”
Meanwhile, on his relationship with Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad, Amirudin said as the Menteri Besar, he would entertain all parties, including the opposition if they have good and rational ideas to develop the state.
“We may have differences. But it is best to focus on what we have in common. There are many things I have in common with Pakatan Harapan leaders. It is better to focus on this than obsessing over our differences.”
In his speech earlier, Amirudin said as the newly appointed Menteri Besar, he would strive to preserve, protect and defend the constitutional rights, royal institution and the welfare of the people in Selangor which have become the bedrock of this state.
“It is important to note that the state of Selangor is indeed a cosmopolitan society. As a matter of fact, in Selangor, we focus on the many things we have in common instead of being obsessed with our differences. The principle that guides our governance is moderation and justice for all. We place a high premium on the spirit of give and take, mutual respect and tolerance.
“And we have proven that this recipe of harmony is the key that has thrust Selangor to become the model state in Malaysia. Selangor is a fine example of the kind of balance and harmony that the nation needs,” he added.
Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharifuddin Idris Shah and his consort, Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin also graced the state’s Menteri Besar Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house here this morning.
Also present was Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail , who is also PKR and Pakatan Harapan president, as well as Economic Affairs minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
More than 50,000 members of the public had joined the celebration, held from 10am to 3pm.
They were treated to an array of Raya delicacies are being served, including Aidilfitri must-haves such as satay, lemang and a variety of kuih at some 45 stalls, as well as performances from local celebrities.
