The opposition should support the PM, says Annuar

KUALA LUMPUR: For now the opposition must support Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Tan Sri Annuar Musa made this curious declaration when he was asked about the possibility of UMNO members leaving en-masse to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

“The opposition now cannot be like the opposition before, of which everything the government said was wrong and should be bashed. I feel that time has passed.”

“Yes we want to offer ourselves again as an alternative (to the current) government in the next four to five years.

“But for now we have to support the prime minister,” said Annuar who is also UMNO secretary-general, while stressing that this was his personal view.

Annuar said this at the parliament lobby here today.

In September Umno president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid said that the party hoped to form a unity government with any party within Pakatan Harapan as soon as possible.

A few days later however Zahid said that the party would no longer talk about the idea for a unity government with other parties, following criticism of the proposal at the Umno general assembly.

He said the issue of forming such a government was now closed.
