Nga Kor Ming steps down as Deputy Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming (DAP-Teluk Intan) announced his resignation today, with immediate effect.

He made the announcement at a press conference at Parliament today, saying that the decision was made in solidarity with former Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusoff.

He was referring to today's motion to dismiss Ariff, who was replaced by former Election Commission chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun.

"This morning, we witnessed for the first time in Malaysia's history, a dedicated Speaker being dismissed without any valid reason.

"Due to that, I, in solidarity with Ariff and in line with my principles, will only serve a government that was chosen by the people.

"And therefore, I would like to announce my resignation as the Deputy Speaker effective immediately, as a matter of principle, honour and in solidarity with Ariff.

"We came in with honour and we will bow out with honour," he said.

Ariff, who was also present at the press conference, said that despite perceptions he was under pressure, that was not the case.

He said he will continue to play by the book and will not bow down to any pressure, as he is "not anyone's special officer."

On parliamentary reform, Ariff expressed hope that it will be continued by Azhar, as the changes are necessary to preserve the good image of Parliament.

"We were aiming for international standards, no less than that, so it will be a pity if there is an effort to (not continue reform efforts)," he said.
