GE15: Former Umno assemblyman among five Warisan candidates in Kedah

ALOR STAR: Former Umno assemblyman and state executive council member Datuk Fadzil Hanafi is among the five Parti Warisan (Warisan) candidates for the 15th General Election (GE15) in Kedah.

Fadzil, 64, who is also Kedah Warisan chairman, will be fielded for the Alor Star parliamentary seat.

He is expected to engage in a five-corner battle against candidates from Pakatan Harapan (PH), Barisan Nasional (BN), Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang).

The Al-Azhar University graduate was once the host of popular "Forum Perdana Ehwal Islam" aired on RTM during the 1990s.

He served as an Umno assemblyman for Tanjung Seri (now Alor Mengkudu) for two terms after winning the 1999 and 2004 general elections.

He served as the state Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman under the administration of former Kedah menteri besar Datuk Seri Syed Razak Syed Zain Barakhbah.

However, Fadzil was sacked from Umno for standing as an independent candidate in the 2013 general election after he was dropped as the party's candidate.

In an announcement in Selangor today, Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal also named four other candidates for the party in Kedah.

They include 48-year-old Islamic medicine practitioner and author Syed Araniri Syed Ahmad who will contest in Kuala Kedah.

Other candidates are 60-year-old Noraini Md Salleh (Pokok Sena); 50-year-old entrepreneur Khairul Anuar Ahmad (Merbok); and Mohd Bakhri Hashim (Padang Serai).
