Harimau must win big against Timor Leste

Malaysia, hoping to re-ignite their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals in men’s football, will need a big win over Timor Leste today.

Timor Leste have conceded eight goals and scored only once in their two defeats while Malaysia have only a point after two matches in Group A.

A win over Timor Leste will take some pressure off Ong Kim Swee’s boys following the surprise 1-0 defeat to the Philippines on Friday.

Malaysia cannot afford any hiccups against Timor Leste as the semi-final door will be closed if the former champions do not win at Rizal Memorial Stadium today.

However, a calm Kim Swee has something up his sleeves to ensure his side score as many goals against minnows Timor Leste.

He said his side will be using a different approach to outsmart the well-built Timorese players.

“Our approach will be different. However, we must have a balance so that we are not caught on the counter.

“We must treat Timor Leste with respect. We cannot take them for granted. However, we have players with pace who can outfox the well-built opponents.

“I have experienced so many matches against Southeast Asian teams in my coaching career, and I know what it takes to succeed.

“It is now up to us to make these matches count. If we do not qualify for the semi-finals, I will be very upset.

“We have to forget about the past and concentrate on matters where we can take advantage of and qualify for the next round. We need to show character to bounce back.”

Forward Akhyar Rashid, who failed to shine in Malaysia’s first two games, did not train yesterday.

Kim Swee said Akhyar was down with an ankle problem and his condition will be assessed on match day. On Akhyar’s poor form, Kim Swee said the 20-year-old has age on his side to become a better player.

“We need to guide him. We need to give him time. I believe he will be an asset one day,” he said.
