Big break for teenager Luqman in Belgium

KUALA LUMPUR: The moment that Luqman Hakim Shamsudin has been waiting for since going to Belgium in August, has arrived.

Today, his club, KV Kortrijk, announced in their website that the 18-year-old Malaysian striker will be part of their team for a mouthwatering match against Belgium's most storied club, RSC Anderlecht on Saturday (2.45am).

It is evident that Luqman has impressed his club's coaches in friendlies and in the Belgium Under-21 league to warrant a place in the senior team for the First Division A match.

No Malaysian has ever played in a top tier European match before. And now a teenager from Kota Baru could set history.

And Malaysian fans will be eagerly hoping to see Luqman take to the field, either in the first 11 or playing as a reserve.

KV Kortrijk announced today that they "have a new name" (Luqman) in their squad for the Division A home match against Anderlect.

Kortrijk and Anderlecht are currently eighth and ninth respectively in the table with both teams having earned 14 points each from nine matches.

The league game is billed by some fans as a "Vincent versus Vincent match", as Kortrijk are owned by Tan Sri Vincent Tan while the Anderlecht manager is Vincent Kompany, who had skippered Manchester City to the EPL title.

Anderlecht, who have provided many national players, are the most successful Belgian football team in European competitions.

At European level, Anderlecht bagged the Europa League in 1983, the Cup Winners Cup in 1976 and 1978, and the Super Cup in 1976 and 1978. They have also won the Belgian league title 34 times.
