West is best: Our boys lead the action in Europe

While nothing is happening in the M-League this weekend, Malaysian fans are expected to switch their attention to Europe.

Not just to watch their favourite overseas teams like Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, or the Clasico featuring Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Now, they can check out Safawi Rasid and Luqman Hakim Shamsudin too.

The two talented youngsters have left the local football scene to seek their fortunes in Europe.

On Thursday, Luqman, 18, finally got his big break since arriving in Belgium in August. KV Kortrijk, owned by Berjaya founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan, announced that Luqman was included in their first team for the Division One A match against Anderlecht this morning (4am Malaysian time).

The Kota Baru-born player managed to convince Kortrijk coaches in friendly matches and in the Belgium Under-23 league that he was ready for his first team debut.

As for the 23-year-old Safawi, it is a matter of time before the sublime winger is unleashed by Portimonense in the Primeria Liga.

Called the "Malaysian reinforcement" by the Portuguese side, Safawi is being readied by Portimonense for their first team.

Today, Safawi will be called into action, but for the Portimonense side that play in the Portuguese Under-23 league, against Maritimo.

The JDT ace, who is on a one-year loan to Portimonense, said he hopes to impress head coach Paulo Sergio to let him make his first team debut.

Safawi felt that the coaches' decision to put him in the Portimonense Under-23 squad is a good move.

The footballer from Dungun made his first appearance with the Portimonense youth side last weekend. However, they lost 3-1 to Sporting CP.

"It has been okay for me. I'm getting quite used to the food, training and my teammates.

"I am now trying to prove myself to the coaches," said Safawi.

"It's a good thing the head coach (Sergio) is allowing me to play for their Under-23 team. This will help me adapt to the football here faster,

"But hopefully not for too long (in the Under-23 team). I know Malaysian fans are waiting for my debut in Portugal," he said.

Safawi, who is famed for his lethal left foot, said he is working on his right foot to add another dimension to his attack.

"If you look at it, I usually play with my left foot. But I have been doing a lot of work on my right foot in training. Hopefully I will become a better player and make a strong claim for a first team place," said Safawi.
