Pride at stake in JDT-BG Pathum clash

JOHOR BAHRU: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) coach Esteban Solari has assured that his charges will not be pulling any punches against BG Pathum United FC when the two sides meet in the Asian Champions League (ACL) at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium tomorrow.

Solari said although both sides have missed out on qualifying for the last-16, there was still pride to play for in the Group I clash.

The Argentine said they want to prove that their 4-2 win over the Thai club on Oct 3 was not a fluke.

He added that JDT are wary of the threat posed by the side coached by Surachai Jaturapattarapong. They currently occupy the top spot in their domestic league.

"They have quality players and have only lost once in 12 matches in the Thai league. Facing them will be a challenge, all ACL matches are tough," said Solari today.

"It is, however, unfortunate that we will be missing two key players - Corbin Ong and Shane Lowry - who are sidelined after picking up injuries during the Malaysia Cup recently due to the poor pitch condition at the National Stadium.

"Shio Hong Wan is also unavailable for one match as he has picked up two yellows.

"We will have to reshuffle the squad, I have already identified who will fill in for Shane, Corbin and Hong Wan."

Solari added that they will have to watch out for BG Pathum's national players as well as their imports.

"Players such as Danilo Alves and Igor Sergeyev (could be dangerous) and they also have strong players in defence," he said.

Solari disclosed that JDT will maintain their usual high-intensity playing style and try to absorb any pressure their opponents place on them.
