KUALA LUMPUR: The Red Giants, who used to have the biggest fans base in Malaysian football, hope to get 20,000 fans for the Sultan of Selangor's Cup, which is making a return after a four-year lapse.
The organising committee hopes to relive the feverish atmosphere of Malaysian football of the 1970s.
The Sultan of Selangor's Cup will revive the historic rivalry between Selangor and Singapore on Aug 17 at the Merdeka Stadium.
As Merdeka Stadium hosts a football match for the first time in many years, there will be fun-filled events including fireworks display, a parachuting demonstration by the Royal Police Force of Malaysia and performances by Malaysian icon Datuk Jamal Abdillah and others.
Committee chairman Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar took members of the media on train rides around Kuala Lumpur to demonstrate the accessibility to Merdeka Stadium.
The stations near Merdeka Stadium are the Hang Tuah LRT Station, Merdeka MRT Station and Hang Tuah Monorail Station. The Maharajalela Monorail Station is expected to open before the kick- off. Services on matchday will be extended to 12.30am.
"The stadium capacity is around 20,000, and we expect it to be full on Aug 17."
Karim reminisced the golden era of Malaysian football, and said they are looking to relive it.
"We know the stadium is nostalgic and it's the same for the rivalry between Selangor and Singapore." he said.
