Tenaga clinch historic treble with thrilling TNB Cup victory

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional ended the season on a high by winning their first treble.

In a thrilling TNB Cup final at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday, Tenaga twice came from behind to defeat defending champion Terengganu 4-2.

It was a huge disappointment for Terengganu, who failed to retain any of their three titles won last year.

Tenaga, fueled by 10 national players, also claimed victory in the Charity Shield and Malaysia Hockey League (MHL).

Terengganu took an early lead through Faizal Saari, who beat Tenaga goalkeeper Hairi Abdul Rahman with a neat effort in the sixth minute. However, Tenaga swiftly equalised as Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi scored from close range in the 19th minute.

Terengganu regained their lead in the 19th minute through Akhimullah Anuar Esook, who collected a through pass before flicking it past keeper Hairi.

But a minute later, Tenaga leveled the score from their fourth penalty corner, converted by South Korean Jang Jong Hyun – marking his 26th goal in the league.

After the break, Tenaga made a strong comeback, taking the lead with a goal by Mughni Kamal in the 33rd minute. Three minutes later, Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal scored from close range, securing a 4-2 lead for Tenaga. Azrai won the top scorer's award with 32 goals.

Tenaga coach Nor Saiful Zaini said it was a dream come true for them to win their first treble.

"Winning a treble is a big boost for us. We finally did it, and I feel proud of my players.

"We faced anxious moments as Terengganu took the lead twice and dominated the first two quarters, but we fought hard in the next two quarters to beat them," said Saiful.

Tenaga received RM25,000 for winning the TNB Cup while Terengganu pocketed RM15,000.

Meanwhile, Maybank secured third place by defeating Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) 2-1 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
