Petanque team take silver at world meet

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Petanque Federation (MPF) believe their athletes are heading in the right direction following the silver medal effort at the Women’s World Championships in China last weekend.

Malaysia’s Sharifah Aqilah Farhana Syed Ali, Suhartisera Zamri, Nurashimah Senin and Nur Iman Aina Ahmad Sabti lost 13-8 to Switzerland in the final.

MPF secretary Cheah Ban Cheng said his team produced a fine performance in China.

In the opening rounds, Malaysia defeated the United States (13-5), Canada (13-1) and the Netherlands (13-3) to reach the final.

The team will now focus on the Asian Championships in Bangkok on Dec 8-12.

“We will finalise our team for the Asian meet later this month. The goal is to promote this sport in Malaysia as it may feature at the 2024 Olympics in Paris,” Ban Cheng added.
