Two-day post-mortem on Podium to chart future

KUALA LUMPUR: A post-mortem on the Podium Programme will be held on Sept 13-14 at the National Sports Institute (NSI) to chart the sporting future of the country.

Among those invited are Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, National Sports Council (NSC) director general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail, National Sports Institute CEO Dr Khairi Zawi, former Podium director Tim Newenham and Olympic Council of Malaysia president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria.

Also on the list are the heads of respective National Sports Associations (NSAs) involved with the programme.

The event will start with a presentation from Podium on their overall performances at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Game and Indonesia Asian Games.

The two-day event will end with a presentation of overall reports and recommendations.

The Sports Ministry will be represented by six officials, the NSC by 27, NSI by 21, OCM by three and NSAs by 33.

The independent members are former OCM secretary general Datuk Low Beng Choo, UiTM sports science lecturer Sadek Mustaffa and Economic Planning deputy director general (community development) Ahmad Feedzal Ramli.

The Podium Programme incepted in 2016 to produce athletes good enough to win Olympic titles in 2020 Tokyo.

A total of RM67 million has been invested into the programme. Malaysia won only seven gold medals each from the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

At the recent Asian Games, the national contingent finished 14th by winning seven gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze medals, and at the Commonwealth Games, Malaysia were 12th overall with a 7-5-12 haul.

The sports under the programme are hockey, weightlifting, swimming, diving, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, silat, lawn bowls, karate, archery, shooting, athletics, sepak takraw, squash, bowling and wushu.

The moderator would be former Sportswriters Association of Malaysia president Ahmad Khawari Isa.
