Nicol and Co beat Asian champions Hong Kong

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s chances of achieving a top-four finish at the women’s World Team Squash Championships are looking bright after a hard-earned 3-0 win over Asian champions Hong Kong in Dalian, China, today.

Nicol David dug deep to deliver the first point in the Group D clash for Malaysia with a come-from-behind 6-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-6 win in 43 minutes over Annie Au at the Xi-Gang Stadium.

S. Sivasangari then delivered the winning point with a 15-13, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9 win over Joey Chan in a match which lasted 35 minutes.

Low Wee Wern next took to court to clinch the third point for Malaysia with a 6-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-9 win over Lee Ka Yi.

The game between Hong Kong and Malaysia was deemed crucial for both nations as it will likely decide who would top the group and avoid a potential clash with defending champions Egypt in the quarter-finals.

The other group matches played today, saw third seeds United States downing France 3-0 and India defeating China 3-0 in Group C while South Africa beat Switzerland 3-0 (Group D).
