Aquatics: Faltering Malaysians

MALAYSIAN swimmers were not at their best at the World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea yesterday.

Welson Sim clocked one minute and 48.61 seconds in the men’s 200m freestyle preliminaries which was only enough to see him finish 29th from over 60 swimmers in the event.

He subsequently missed the top-16 cut for the semi-finals.

His time was slower than his national record of 1:47.36 and even further from the Olympic ‘A’ qualifying time of 1:47.02s.

United States-based Phee Jinq En also did not perform well, finishing 27th from over 50 swimmers in the women's 100m breastroke preliminaries.

She clocked1:09.05s. The Olympic ‘A’ time for the event is 1:07.07s.

Tern Jian Han’s 57.34s was only good enough to see him finish 48th in the men’s 100m backstroke preliminaries.

Tia’a Faang Der will compete in the men’s 200m butterfly today.
