How to protect yourself while travelling

AS of December 14, 2021, fully vaccinated Malaysians can now travel to 162 countries in the world, according to online travel agency KAYAK.

Most countries have certain restrictions or quarantine requirements, and Malaysians generally need to observe a seven-day quarantine upon returning from international sectors.

Furthermore, Malaysia and Singapore have commenced the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL), allowing residents of both countries to travel back and forth more conveniently.

With more people travelling overseas, it's important to take necessary precautions.

Exposure to crowds and new places still poses risks to life-threatening, infectious diseases.

Plus, certain travel locations may not be as sanitary; even the food and drinks you consume may not be safe and hygienic.

This is why those planning to travel should not let their guards down.

Besides being protected against Covid-19, travellers are encouraged to safeguard themselves against diseases that are common in the country or city they are visiting.

For instance, typhoid is often caused by consuming food with salmonella typhi bacteria and can result in abdominal pain, fever and a general feeling of being unwell. In fact, 75 per cent of typhoid cases are acquired while travelling.

Countries in South Africa and South America also require travellers to be vaccinated against yellow fever. Similarly, the meningococcal vaccine is also compulsory for all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

Some of the other common travel vaccines include influenza, cholera, tetanus and rabies.

Malaysians intending to travel overseas are advised to consult their doctor and start travel immunisations at least four to six weeks before travelling.
