Narrow escape for lorry driver

KOTA TINGGI: A 29-year-old driver cheated death after his sand-laden lorry crashed onto two cars, skidded and turned turtle at KM43, Jalan Lok Heng-Mawai, here, on Saturday.

Mohd Sharol Mohd Sa'at was trapped in the crushed lorry cabin for 40 minutes before Fire and Rescue Department officers used a hydraulic jaw of life to rescue him.

He only suffered a broken arm, despite massive damage to the lorry in the 5.30pm accident.

Initial investigations revealed that Sharol had lost control of the lorry and crashed into the rear of a Perodua Kelisa in front of him, before swerving into the lane of oncoming traffic and slamming into a Proton Waja.

The lorry then skidded and turned turtle.

Sharol was rushed to the Kota Tinggi Hospital. The drivers of the Kelisa and Waja, aged 67, and 46, sustained minor injuries and received outpatient treatment at the same hospital.

Kota Tinggi district police chief superintendent Rahmat Othman said the lorry and the Kelisa were heading towards Kota Tinggi from Felda Simpang Waha, when Sharol lost control of his vehicle. By Jassmine Shadiqe
