Immigration officers help deliver baby

KUALA LUMPUR: It had just been another normal working day for two Immigration officers, until a pregnant passenger who had just landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) approached them.

The female officers, who wanted only to be known as Marlina and Nelly Lawrence,  knew that they had to act quickly as the woman was in great pain.

“The incident happened on Friday afternoon. The Turkish woman was travelling with her one-year-old child.

“Marlina and Nelly sought assistance from a nearby clinic but it was shorthanded but promised to help as soon as possible,” said an Immigration official.

The duo kept the mother calm, and brought her to the detention room to wait for the medical team to arrive.

“Marlina and Nelly said they were nervous but excited at the same time, as they would be part of the team which would help the mother deliver.

“However, the baby couldn’t wait. The baby was already crowning when the doctor and a medical sister arrived.”

“Marlina ran to the nearby clinic to look for scissors to cut the baby’s umbilical cord,” the official said adding that the whole incident happened within an hour.

The mother and her newborn son were then sent to the Putrajaya Hospital.

A photo of the Immigration officers with the newborn baby they helped deliver went viral on social media yesterday with many applauding them for their good deed.
