Police, Welfare Dept rescue disabled woman locked under a house for 10 years

TUMPAT: A woman who was caged under a small and dark space of her family's home in Kampung Pasir Pekan Hulu for more than 10 years was today rescued by the police and the welfare department.

The woman, in her 30s, and believed to be disabled, was rescued by authorities after being alerted by the Tumpat People's Action Council and local press.

The woman was then sent to the Tumpat district hospital for further treatment.

Tumpat police chief Superintendent Zaharuddin Rasip told reporters that police and the welfare department would investigate the case.

“We will also call her family members to determine the real reason for them to place and locked her there," he said.

The room, with a size of a barn, has a small bed with the floor covered by the woman's own faeces and urine.

Electricity and water supply were provided outside the door which was locked from the outside.
