GEORGE TOWN: The police have ruled out any elements of crime from the upcoming international Freemasons conference and allowed the event to proceed as planned.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mior Farid Alatrash Wahid told the New Straits Times that police would not act against the organisation or the hotel where the four-day event will be held, following a report lodged last week.
“Our investigations showed Freemasons is a registered body with the Registrar of Societies (RoS), contrary to allegations that it was illegal.
“Also, the event will be held indoor, in an orderly manner,” he said.
A four-day Scottish Masonic Conference is slated to be held from Feb 24 to Feb 27 at a Batu Ferringhi beachfront hotel, prompting outcry from Muslims nationwide.
Last Thursday, representatives from nine non-governmental organisations in Penang lodged a report at the northeast district police headquarters in Jalan Patani.
They urged the police to investigate if the organisation was registered with RoS and claimed that Freemasons had a hidden agenda against Islam.
