Five good reasons why you - an adult - need to watch BoBoiBoy: The Movie

This is not a spoiler. After seeing BoBoiBoy: The Movie on opening day, this writer - who has been a fan of the series since the days TV3 was running to death only four completed episodes - is amazed to see the end product and believes that adults would be just as entertained as their kids (if not more).

While BoBoiBoy the series has been winning hearts on the small screen since 2011, tackling the big screen is a different ball game altogether, and the young team of animators at Animonsta Studios knew this. It is never easy to please fans who are already familiar with each character's quirks; and trying to pack in drama alongside action sequence in a film meant for both kids and adults can truly be a test for the most creative.

Yet Animonsta did it, and the Cyberjaya-based animation studio did it well. Here's five reasons why you - the adult - should go see the film.

1. A script tailored for both kids and adults

The movie script is a carefully-crafted piece that not only captures the attention of the younger viewers so that they can easily follow the story arc, but also the adults who were forced to bring them to cinema. Fans will love how the likes of BoBoiBoy, Ying, Yaya, Gopal, Fang and Papa Zola stayed in character, at the same time those who have never seen BoBoiBoy the series before will be able to appreciate the fresh dose of jokes and a healty serving of puns.

2. Eye-popping animation

From the get-go, BoBoiBoy: The Movie offers an awesome feast of action, exploiting angles that only animation can freely achieve. Though technically with visual effects, live-action films can achieve a myriad of camera-angle miracles, with 3D animation the experience is maximised and the animators at Animosta did it with flair.

3. A kickass soundtrack

The film soundtrack is augmented by the inclusion of tracks from Malaysia's Bunkface and Indonesia's D'Masiv. That said, the sample that stole the thunder is a Gen X favourite, XPDC's C.I.N.T.A. The audio work that filled up the entire film is also a commendable effort.

4. Easter eggs.. easter eggs everywhere

If you're a fan of the series and love hunting for 'easter eggs' in movies, BoBoiBoy: The Movie is filled with them. From road signs to product brands to the names of supporting character, the animation has a bunch of inside jokes and hidden information that only people who have viewed the series all through the end credits will be able to spot. And no, it won't be as tough as spotting Daniel Craig in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

5. Superpowers that make you go "hmmmm.."

Finally, a mesh of superpowers bestowed upon the young superheroes shaped the film into a concoction that will remind you of old time favourites - Naruto, Power Rangers and Captain America to name a few - that many parents of today would have grown up with. (Slight spoiler: The way Fang's powers snake through the land reminds this writer of the old version of My Little Pony.)

While a good excuse to see this film is that Malaysians should support Malaysian-made films, really, the reason why BoBoiBoy: The Movie is worth watching is that at the heart of it, it's simply a darn good animation piece.
