Firemen free four-year-old girl from being stuck in metal grill

KLANG: The Kota Raja Fire and Rescue Department took 15-minutes to free a four-year-old girl whose leg became stuck in a metal grill drain cover this morning.

The incident took place at about 8am along Jalan Raja Nong Kiri in Kampung Jawa when the girl is believed to have stepped on the drain cover while walking with her parents to their car after having breakfast.

The girl's right leg had slipped through the metal grill gap, pinning her up to her thigh.

Rescue operation head Mohd Shafiee Rawop said the girl's parents had called the station after attempts to free their daughter failed.

Following the emergency call, a team of six firemen arrived at the scene armed with a hydraulic spreader to open a gap on the metal grill.

"The traumatised girl was crying badly when we arrived, even more so when she saw the equipment we brought along to create a gap on the metal grill. She was very afraid that something would happen to her leg.

"So we used distraction tactics to avert her attention on her stuck leg. We also comforted her by saying we were here to save her and told her not be scared. She calmed down shortly after that with assuring words from her parents.

"We did not want to scare her further, so as we were using the hydraulic spread to widen the gap between the metal grill, we covered her leg with a piece of cloth so that she would not see how it was being done.

"The operations was successful and it was over in 15 minutes. The girl sustained light injuries and was brought to the clinic for treatment," said Shafiee.
