JB cycling horror: Cops release driver after recording statement

JOHOR BARU: The car driver who allegedly rammed into the group of teenage boys on their bicycles at Jalan Lingkaran Dalam near here on Saturday has been released on police bail after her statement was recorded.

Johor police chief Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Wan Mohd confirmed that the 22-year-old woman was released yesterday.

"She was allowed to go after we took her statement. She is traumatised by the accident," said Wan Ahmad Najmuddin.

He was speaking after attending the Chinese New Year open house organised by Pulai Member of Parliament and Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed at Kompleks Tan Sri Mohamed Rahmat here.

The woman, who works at a seafood restaurant in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah in Skudai here, was returning home from a friend's house in Taman Pelangi when the accident occurred at about 3am.

"Initial investigation showed that the driver was not intoxicated or speeding at the time of the accident. She was also not using a handphone at the time as claimed by some," said Wan Ahmad Najmuddin.

It was reported that eight teenage boys were reportedly killed after being hit by a car. Five more were left with broken legs, two in unstable condition due to brain haemorrhage, and another with head wounds.

The incident was believed to have occurred when the teenagers were cycling towards Dataran Bandaraya Johor Baru and were blocking part of Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, next to the Mahmoodiah Cemetery.
