KOTA BARU: Three people were killed, and four others were injured in a collision involving a Proton Saga and a Mercedes-Benz at Km31 of Jalan Kota Baru-Kuala Krai near Pulai Chondong, Machang, yesterday.
Machang Fire and Rescue Station chief Nik Afsham Nik Pa said Azizah Zakaria, 74, her daughter Siti Rohani Yajid, 35, who was the driver of the Proton Saga, and grandson Mohd Zahirul Fitri Mohd Harul Nizam, 11, were killed in the 3pm accident.
He said the injured were Azizah's husband, Yajid Ismail, 82, and Rohani's three other children, Mohd Tharid Hakim, five, Nor Eiyazi Amani (age not known) and Nor Adita Aisyah, two; while the driver of the Mercedes-Benz, Lim Ah Tek, 72, was unhurt.
"The accident took place when Siti Rohani's car, which was heading to Kota Baru from Kuala Krai, is believed to have gone out of control and collided with the Mercedes-Benz driven by Ah Tek.
"The Proton Saga went up in flames from the impact, but passers-by managed to pull out all the victims before that happened. Ah Tek was unscathed," he said.
Nim Afsham said firemen who arrived at the scene 15 minutes after the mishap took 10 minutes to douse the flames, while the dead and injured were sent to the Machang Hospital. -- BERNAMA
