GEORGE TOWN: The teen driver who drove against the traffic along the North-South Expressway (NSE), leading to a multi-vehicle accident which claimed one life, will be charged for the offence at the Bukit Mertajam Court tomorrow.
Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said 19-year-old Ng Pei Ven will be charged under Section 44 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.
Upon conviction, she could be jailed for no less than three years and not more than 10 years, and fined not less than RM8,000 and not more than RM20,000.
"Upon discussion with the Attorney General on Wednesday, it has been decided that she will be charged under the said section on Friday," he said in a statement today.
In the 7.50am incident on March 14, Ng made a sudden U-turn about 100 metres from the Sungai Dua Toll and drove on the fast lane against traffic flow for about five kilometres.
Her Proton Gen 2 struck a Perodua Kelisa driven by technician Mohamad Fandi Rosli, 26, and led to a chain of collisions involving several vehicles.
Fandi died at the scene, while several others, including the teen driver, sustained minor injuries.
She was charged with taking amphetamines last Friday and is currently out on bail.
