Man who single-handedly stole RM600k from Damansara bank arrested

KUALA LUMPUR: The man suspected of single-handedly stealing RM600,000 from a bank in Damansara Heights here last month, is now in police custody.

It is learnt that the man, in his 30, was arrested at his house in Batu Berendam, Melaka about 7pm yesterday.

A raiding team from Kuala Lumpur police was deployed following a tip-off on the man’s whereabouts.

It is learnt that the raiding team also recovered some cash, believed to be a part of the RM600,000 stolen from the bank.

The man, a father of two, was taken to Kuala Lumpur to assist the probe. Police are in the midst of obtaining a remand order against him.

A police source confirmed the arrest but declined to divulge further details.

On Sept 8, a man clad in shorts, T-shirt and slippers, had walked into the bank about 12.30 pm, posing as a fire extinguisher technician. He allegedly told the bank manager that he had been assigned to carry out inspections at the premises.

He managed to sneak into the safe room without raising suspicion, grabbed the money and was in and out of the bank in 20 minutes.

The bank’s employees only learnt that they had been robbed two hours later.

It is believed that the bank heist was not the only crime the man had committed. It was reported that a Bangsar businessman had claimed that the man had visited his shop on Dec 4 last year under the pretext of carrying out pipework repairs.

A local English daily also reported that the man was involved in more than 20 con cases since 2014. He allegedly preyed on private companies in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor stealing cash, cellphones and laptop computers.
