Shooting of two men at coffee shop may be due to revenge

JOHOR BARU: Police is looking at revenge as a possible motive behind the shooting of two men at a coffee shop in Bukit Gambir near Tangkak yesterday.

Tangkak police chief Superintendent Mohad Idris Samsuri said police was looking at all possible motives for the 4am shooting but added that the incident may be due to a personal vendetta.

In the incident, the suspect, who was wearing a full face helmet and was riding a motorcycle, stopped by the coffee shop and fired seven shots with a semi automatic gun at a group of five men who were seated at a table having a late supper, injuring two of them.

"The suspect and the two victims may know each other as it was not a random shooting, considering that the suspect was aiming at a particular target before fleeing the scene," he said.

The two victims, 32-year old car mechanic and a 30-year old unemployed man, were seated together at the table when the shooting started.

"We believe the suspect was aiming at one or more of the five men at the table and quickly fled when the shots hit the targets."

Idris said investigation was ongoing and police were gathering information from eye-witnesses and obtaining closed circuit camera television recordings from two business premises located next to the coffee shop to facilitate investigation.

Idris said one of the victims was shot on both of his shoulders while the other victim was shot on his left thigh. Both men were rushed to the hospital by their friends and reported to be in a stable condition.

"The victims were hospitalised at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar and at the Melaka hospital respectively, and were responding well to treatment. The shots did not hit any of their vital organs," he said.

The case was being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 3(1) of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for discharging a firearm in the commission of a scheduled offence.
