Villagers beat up, strip suspected motorcycle thief

LUNDU: A 26-year-old Indonesian man was beaten up and stripped to his underwear by members of the public after they caught him and another man trying to steal a motorcycle near here this morning.

In the 8am incident, the group of villagers spotted the suspect and his accomplice trying to pick the lock of a Yamaha 125Z in Kampung Stunggang here.

A short chase on foot ensued between the villagers and the duo before one of them were caught and beaten up.

Several pictures showing the suspect, only in his underwear with his hands and legs tied, went viral on social media.

The suspect’s accomplice, however, managed to flee.

Lundu district police chief Deputy Superintendent Wong Chee Keong when contacted said the suspect sustained wounds and bruises on his face, body and legs from the scuffle.

“He was taken to Lundu Hospital for checks. An X-ray scan showed there was no internal injuries,” Wong said.

Police, he added, have also arrested his accomplice, also from Indonesia.

He said the suspect, 27, was hiding inside a fishing boat in Sungai Kayan here.

“Both of them will be remanded to facilitate investigation into the case,” he said.
