Eagle-eyed teacher spots abuse marks on student; boy's dad arrested

ALOR STAR: Pendang police have arrested a 34-year-old man after they found marks on his nine-year-old son believed to be due to physical abuse.

The man, a blacksmith, was picked up at 4.30pm today following a report lodged by the boy’s teacher at the Pendang district police headquarters this afternoon.

Kedah police Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mior Farid Al Athrash Wahid said the teacher had noticed bruises on the boy’s face when he arrived at school this morning.

When questioned, the boy later admitted that his father had hit him.

“The boy also showed the teacher burn marks on his feet, believed to have been caused by hot iron,” he said in a statement.

Early investigations showed that the boy is a slow learner and is still traumatised by the incident.

He said the boy has been sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for treatment. Police have also reported the case to the Welfare Department.

He said police are investigating the case under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 which carries a maximum fine of RM20,000 or maximum jail sentence of 10 years or both if convicted.
