Bintulu man arrested for robbing, injuring his mother

BINTULU: Police believed they have solved a robbery case involving an elderly woman, who sustained slashed injuries during the incident, following the arrest of her drug addict son.

It was learnt that the suspect, 36, was attempting to flee the district when he was arrested at the Bintulu Bus Terminal here at 2.15pm yesterday.

Bintulu district police chief Superintendent Zulkipli Suhaili said his men found several documents and belongings of the victim when they apprehended the suspect.

“We have confiscated the documents and items, which will be used as evidence to prosecute the man.

“A urine test conducted on the suspect showed that he is positive of methamphetamine.

“Preliminary investigation showed that the suspect was high on drugs when he committed the offence,” said Zulkipli in a statement today.

The suspect, he said, would be produced at the Bintulu Court Complex tomorrow for remand.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code, which carries the maximum 20 years’ imprisonment, fine and strokes of the rotan upon conviction.

It was reported that the victim, 61, was injured when she was robbed at her house at the MNLG housing area here on Friday.

The victim was alone sleeping in the living room when a man with his face covered pounced towards her.

A struggle ensued as the woman tried to stopped the suspect, who was armed with a sharp weapon, from leaving the house with her handbag.

Apart from suffering from slashed injuries on her face and body, the victim loss RM500 and several documents during the incident.

She is currently recuperating from treatment at the Bintulu Hospital here.
