Taman Austin altercation suspect surrenders to police

JOHOR BARU: A 22-year old male suspect, believed to be involved in a fracas in Taman Austin Perdana here on Friday, has surrendered himself to the police last night.

Johor Baru Selatan district police chief assistant commisioner Sulaiman Salleh, when contacted, said the suspect from Johor Baru had surrendered himself at 10pm.

“We have recorded his statement and he has been detained for questioning for the next 24 hours,”Sulaiman told the New Straits Times.

Sulaiman said police will mount a search for the remaining six suspects, aged between 20 and 50, who are still at large, to facilitate investigation into an altercation, which took place outside a mosque.

In the incident, a 28-year-old driver was allegedly bashed by a group of men after Friday prayers, as the victim had continuously sounded the car horn in front of a mosque as his car was blocked.

Four men were initially arrested after the incident, but they have since been released on police bail. The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
