Floodwaters recede substantially in Terengganu, but river levels rise

KUALA TERENGGANU: The flood situation in Terengganu has improved significantly, with only two districts still operating relief centres today.

Evacuation centres in Dungun, Marang, Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus were closed in stages on Thursday as floodwaters receded.

State Civil Defence Department Lt Colonel Che Adam A Rahman said that as of 7am on today, 48 people from 12 families are still taking shelter at two relief centres in Setiu and Besut.

Adam said 27 evacuees from five families remain at Surau Kampung Nyatoh in Setiu, as their houses are still inundated by floodwaters of between 0.8 metre and 1 metre high.

In Besut, 21 people from seven families are still housed at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tembila – a big drop from the 558 victims from 139 families at five relief centres in the district on Thursday.

However, the state’s Drainage and Irrigation Department’s flood portal stated that as of 7am, two major rivers in Setiu have exceeded their danger levels.

Sungai Chalok at Chalok bridge was recorded at 8.76 metres, which is 0.36 metre above its danger level.

Sungai Nerus in Kampung Langkap, meanwhile, has risen to 21.52 metres – 0.02 metre above the danger level of 21.50 metres.

The portal also stated that two other rivers in Hulu Terengganu and Besut have breached their warning levels.

In Hulu Terengganu, Sungai Telemong in Kuala Ping was recorded at 19.56 metres (its warning level is 19.30 metres); while Sungai Besut in Kampung La was recorded at 20.93 metres (its warning level is 20.80 metres).
