Klang council's 'all-in-one' app to make life easier for residents

KLANG: City residents will soon be able to check on their parking summons, places of interest in Klang and get latest news updates, all in one click.

This will be made possible with the Klang Municipal Council’s (MPK) soon-to-be launched application, known as Saluran Maklumat MPK, or Smart-MPKlang, the first of its kind in the country among local councils.

MPK president Datuk Mohamad Yasid Bidin said the Smart-MPKlang would serve as a one-stop information hub where users can get various information, including tax records, places of interests, list of MPK branches and dengue hotspots.

He said the application, which will be launched next month, can be accessed via Facebook Messenger.

“All you need to do is install Facebook Messenger, search for Smart-MPKlang and you will find the app with MPK’s logo. Click ‘get started’ and a virtual assistant will respond to your queries and offer a selection of categories to choose.

“The application is still in its development stage. For now, users can check their summons, MPK’s branch location, corporate info, points of interest and latest news. They can also switch languages between English and Bahasa Malaysia.

“The system, developed by Microsoft Malaysia, will also come handy for tourists visiting Klang since it contains information on points of interest, which includes places of worship, legacy trail (historic buildings such as the Royal Klang Gallery, Chartered Bank Building and Istana Alam Shah) and interesting places (such as Pulau Ketam, Star Cruise Terminal and Taman Rakyat).”

Yasid was speaking to reporters here today after chairing MPK’s monthly meeting.

He said MPK plans to feature more categories and sub-categories in the future, such as to enable users to lodge complaints, check their tax records, explore eateries and restaurants in the city and notify residents of any current happenings or provide dengue case updates.

“This way, they (residents) can stay updated and take precautionary measures, especially if their residential area is involved (area where dengue cases were reported).

“We will also advertise job vacancies and inform traders of vacant stalls available for rent via this app in the future,” he added.

Meanwhile, Yasid said MPK’s Ecogen Recycle MPKlang mobile app has been a huge success and had bagged them local and international awards.

It won two prestigious global awards this year, the Green World Award in Dubai and was the Green Apple Award Best Practise Environment 2017 gold winner in London, also this year.

The app, launched early this year, was utilised in 21 residential areas in Bandar Bukit Raja and MPK is looking to expand it to Bandar Bukit Tinggi and Bandar Botanic Klang, next year.

Ecogen Recycle MPKlang acts as a moderator in data recording and documenting of environmental management; in creating a database as a source of recyclable items record keeper for the people, the municipal council, state government and federal government.

“It was launched as part of our ‘go green’ mission, to create a balanced and sustainable life between humans and the environment and to raise awareness on recycling culture at home.

“The system was developed to guide the public in producing a benchmark among the community in order to create competition in recycle practice implementations which comes with incentives provided by MPK,” Yasid said.

Yasid added that the programme was expected to be further expanded to include 11 local authorities in Selangor and schools in 2018; to government and private sectors in Klang in 2019; and manufacturers in 2020.
