South Korean engineer killed in car-lorry collision on NSE

TAIPING: A man who was killed in a collision between his car and a stationary lorry near Bukit Gantang early on Thursday has been identified as an engineer from South Korea.

The victim, Kim Eun Koo, 40, was killed on the spot.

Kim was driving from Kuala Lumpur to Penang when his car smashed into the rear of a lorry parked in the emergency lane at Km226.1 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) at 7am.

The lorry driver, 23, had stopped his vehicle because one of its gears was faulty, and he was waiting for a mechanic to arrive when the incident occurred. He escaped unhurt.

"Due to the impact of the collision, the victim sustained severe head and body injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Taiping police chief Superintendent Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Taib.

A state Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a team of firemen took about two hours to extricate the body.

"The victim was stuck underneath the lorry and his body was pinned to his seat.

The operation ended at 8.10am," he added.

"The body was taken to the Taiping Hospital's Forensic Unit for a post-mortem," Mohamad said.

The lorry driver has been detained and is expected to be remanded to assist the police in their investigation.
