Motorcyclist in coma, mother with fractured rib cage in accident involving lorry on Penang Bridge

GEORGE TOWN: A motorcyclist is in a coma while his pillion rider fractured her rib cage when they were involved in an accident at Km7.1 of the Penang Bridge today.

In the 11.55am incident, the 33-year-old victim and his mother, in her 50s, were also dragged for about 30m by the lorry which rammed into them.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said the man was currently in the red zone at the Penang Hospital while the woman was conscious.

“Initial investigation showed both victims were on the way to the island when the accident happened.

“The lorry driver is believed to have lost control of his vehicle and rammed into their motorcycle,” he said.

Anuar said the impact of the crash caused the man to be dragged for about 30m and he was pinned under the heavy vehicle.

It was learnt that the woman’s handbag was taken away by an unknown individual at the scene.

Police have appealed for information about the accident.
