Azmin to remain as Selangor MB temporarily

SHAH ALAM: Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali will remain as Selangor Menteri Besar for the time being until a handover can be organised smoothly.

Private Secretary to the Sultan of Selangor Datuk Mohammad Munir Bani said Mohamed Azmin will also have to present a list of suitable candidates to take over as the state's MB to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah before an official appointment can be made.

This development comes as Mohamed Azmin decided to take up the post of Economic Affairs Minister at the federal level.

Mohammad Munir Bani in a statement, said Mohamed Azmin will step down as Selangor MB once the Sultan of Selangor agrees to a new candidate to fill the role.

"The Sultan of Selangor has been informed by Selangor MB Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali of his decision to accept the portfolio of Economic Affairs as its minister in the federal government," he said, adding that Mohamed Azmin came to the decision after obtaining an explanation and confirmation from the prime minister on the jobscope of the economic affairs portfolio.

The statement also said that the Sultan of Selangor gave his blessing for Mohamed Azmin to take the role of Economic Affairs Minister.

Yesterday, the Sultan of Selangor granted Mohamed Azmin an audience at Istana Kayangan to discuss the matter.

It is understood that Mohamed Azmin is set to take his oath of office as a federal minister at Istana Negara at 5.30pm today.

On May 11, the PKR deputy president was sworn in as Selangor MB after Pakatan Harapan (PH) managed to retain the state in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Meanwhile, last week, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced Mohamed Azmin's name as the new Economic Affairs Minister leading to speculation on whether he will hold both posts, or give one up.
