Broken drainage culverts likely cause of landslide

KUALA LUMPUR: The landslide at the Azalea Apartments in Jalan Sri Penchala 1, Kampung Sri Penchala, here, today is believed to have been caused by broken drainage culverts, said Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan.

He said he had directed the Malaysia Public Works Institute (Ikram) to look into the possibility of soil movement in the area.

“We have directed the Fire and Rescue Department to cordon the affected area as a precautionary measure in the event of further movement.

“It is understood that there has been no movement so far, but Ikram will conduct periodic monitoring before the preliminary investigation results are available,” he said at the location, here, today.

He said City Hall would work with the Social Welfare Department soon on the temporary settlement of 65 residents occupying the four-storey apartment.

“They will be temporarily housed at Sungai Penchala Hall nearby,” he added.

It was earlier reported that all 65 residents would be housed at the Taman Tun Dr Ismail Community Hall.

Segambut member of parliament Hannah Yeoh advised the residents to move their belongings with the help of authorities.

“Residents are allowed to move their belongings under the close watch of fire personnel for safety reasons.

“A control post should also be placed below the apartment to update residents with the latest information on the incident.”

Yesterday, it was reported that about 65 residents were evacuated. - Bernama
