BUKIT MERTAJAM: More than one hundred victims in Penang are still displaced from their homes due to floods on the mainland.
Three relief centres have since been opened, namely Tadika Kemas Kampung Manggis Permatang Tinggi, Dewan Orang Ramai Tok Suboh and Dewan Orang Ramai Taman Sukun Bukit Minyak.
A total of 131 people from 35 families are seeking shelter there.
State Welfare, Caring Society, and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the situation at the relief centres was under control.
No new floods were reported on the island.
Meanwhile, the number of victims affected by floods in low-lying districts in Johor increased to 105 from 24 families yesterday.
Johor Local Government, Urban Wellbeing and Environment Committee chairman Tan Chen Choon said the number of victims increased at noon. There were 91 people from 21 families at 8am.
Tan said as at noon yesterday, the temporary evacuation centre at SK Melayu Raya in Pontian housed 89 people from 21 families.
The victims are from Kampung Pak Khalid, Kampung Paya Embun, Kampung Sepakat Jaya, Kampung Melayu Raya and Kampung Maju Jaya.
“Meanwhile, 16 victims from three families in Batu Pahat have been sheltered in SK Sungai Kajang since Oct 23,” he said in a statement.
In Negri Sembilan, the flood situation in Jelebu continued to show improvement with the number of victims at the temporary relocation centre dropping to 38 from 16 families yesterday compared with 69 people from 23 families on Saturday.
According to the Public Welfare Department’s Disaster Info portal, of the total, 24 are adults, while the rest are children.
Two relief centres are open at Balai Raya Kampung Juntai and Masjid Kampung Jerang.
On Saturday, three of the five centres, which were opened on Friday and Saturday, were closed after the situation improved and residents were allowed to return home.
Among the affected villages are Kampung Telekong, Kampung Chennah, Kampung Juntai, Kampung Simpang Durian and Kampung Jerang.
