12-year-old rescued from child labour at KL market

KUALA LUMPUR: A 12-year-old migrant boy who had been working at the Pasar Borong here for the past two months has been rescued.

Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department director, Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said they were conducting a check at the market when they found the boy loading vegetables and fish onto a truck.

The boy, who can only speak Tamil, admitted to entering Malaysia two months ago having strayed thousands of kilometres from his family in Myanmar to earn a living.

He said he believed he entered the country legitimately, though he did not possess any travel documents.

The boy said he entered Malaysia through the northern border of Thailand after paying about 4 million Kyat (RM9,000) to an agent who promised to provide the necessary documentation for him to travel and work in the country.

"I have been working here, loading trucks and stacking vegetables for RM40 a day for the past two months," he said at the site of the raid early this morning.

The boy said he lived nearby and would work from midnight to 6am. He said he wanted to continue living in Malaysia.

Wan Mohammed said the boy, who was among 38 undocumented migrants detained during the inspection, will be handed over to the relevant authorities for further action.
